Artist statement
A practice of transformation
Anthony Lee is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and jewellery. Drawing upon the cultural landscape as a site of inquiry, his work explores themes of identity, materiality, cultural memory and contemporary social experience.
Characterised by intricate layers of surface detail, Lee's works traverse scales from intimate objects to large-scale installations, reflecting an ongoing engagement with process, transformation and experimentation. Working with found and reclaimed materials, Lee combines labour-intensive craft techniques with acts of accumulation, repetition and assemblage.
Everyday objects are reconfigured and elevated, undergoing a process of material and symbolic transformation. Through this alchemy of making, Lee reasserts the value of the handmade within an increasingly digital world, foregrounding touch, presence and embodied knowledge.
The artist's energy and subjectivity are embedded within each work. Rather than following predetermined outcomes, Lee embraces discovery through process, allowing the picture plane and material encounter to guide the evolution of the work. Decisions accrue over time, producing compositions that are both intuitive and highly resolved.
Constructing narratives that operate as archives of the recent past, Lee's works reveal an acute observation of contemporary society while engaging broader political and cultural concerns. Simultaneously artefact and critique, his practice reflects the layered, complex and often contradictory conditions of human experience, offering new ways to consider identity, value and belonging.
